Chuang Tha Andaman Resort
CHUANG THA, MYANMAR
ensemble studio is indeed honoured to receive yet another winning award for our Chaung Tha Andaman Resort Project (Hospitality) at the RTF Architecture & Design Awards.
The challenges due to terrain and geographic constraint actually became the impetus for our team to reimagine alternative sustainable architectural solutions.
From the nautilus structure found on the Andaman seashore, the masterplan of the resort is birthed. The architectural concept of terraced landforms are also synonymous with local tea farms, which draws a harmonious geographic relationship.
Appropriating the idea of the tiered base found in traditional Burmese Pagodas, the villas are layered to the site’s natural terrain with infinity pools and turfed roofs.
Sustainability was a guiding concern from the onset of the project. For it to be highly sustainable, we introduced photovoltaic panels, green roofs, and a rainwater collection system. Retractable glass walls will that will diminish the boundary between inside and out so as to facilitate natural ventilation.
The solar array, which is tied into the electric grid, can generate more power than the resort would consume. We have also tried to aim for more than 100% green replacement. The property as being one with nature - comes with colonising plant scapes and water features throughout to reduce tropical heat.
Thoroughly contemporary in its design language, elements of the vernacular such as natural grass thatched roofing and bamboo rafters are also incorporated in novel and refreshing ways with light penetrations and niches.
